As we are all stuck inside, what we do for fun dramatically shifts, and for a lot of people, video games became the best option. Several games were released right around now, Doom: Eternal, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, are the big 2, and although these games are about as far apart as you can get in terms of game play, they marked the same way, and had similar selling numbers, which were very, very good, selling more than all previous entrees in their respective series's combined.
These 2 games did very little in terms of actual marketing, no massive billboards, you tube or TV ads, but instead tried to advertise though people. By giving known content creators and reviews early access to these games, with a deal to "give an honest opinion" online to their fans, these games were able to appear both overall well made and fun, as well as genuine, a quality that has become incredibly important in today market.
Another important aspect of these sales is the pandemic we find ourselves in, where people are stuck inside, and with people stuck inside, video games are one of the best ways to pass time.
