You may have seen the infamous "Imagine" video on Instagram, started by actress Gal Gadot in an effort to get people to come together or something else well-meaning but actually ignorant and unhelpful. You may have also seen actress Evangeline Lilly ignore the quarantine rules and tweeting about her 'business as usual' or Vanessa Hudgens talk about how she 'respects' the virus and how its deaths are 'inevitable' (?). This irritated me so much because I know for a fact these people have billions of dollars combined, and they can actually be putting their money to use instead of calling upon their Instagram followers to do something.
It's really easy to give to charities as a celebrity. And, although you shouldn't be donating to get something out of it for yourself, you honestly do. Donations are tax-deductible and you get good PR from it. So what's stopping these celebs from emptying their pockets to stop a pandemic, instead of calling upon us to do something?
I honestly have no idea. I guess it's possibly due to the fact that they're trying to get everyone to rally around a common cause and act selflessly during this global period of need. This in itself isn't problematic, it's their behavior that follows it.
Regular people, like healthcare providers, are regularly doing things like treating patients, donating money, creating masks, supporting local businesses, shopping for their at-risk neighbors, and many other things without expecting anything out of it. And while I'm not saying that a celebrity has to personally sew hundreds of masks, an A-List celebrity like Kim Kardashian could easily donate $3 million dollars to a cause that is affecting people across the globe, including her and her family.
All I'm saying is celebrities aren't being as helpful and as selfless as they could be in these trying times. An Instagram post saying 'wash your hands' isn't nearly as helpful as donations of time or money.
And if y'all are feeling more selfless than Vanessa Hudgens, here are some amazing places to donate your money and/or time:
1. Crisis Aid International
2. Doctors Without Borders
3. IMA World Health.
4. Heart to Heart International

I agree with this so much! Everyday I see those celebs post about their quarantine live in their multimillion dollar mansions and urging us to donate. I think they urge other people to donate to see more "in touch" with the rest of the world despite the fact that they are clearly not. Also, whenever one celeb starts to donate, others do too because they don't want to seem ignorant, but don't want to be the first to donate either.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I am so frustrated seeing that there are people who could be donating during this time of crisis, who have a huge surplus of money, and yet they just post a picture or a tweet. And you even noted that donations are good due to them being tax deductible so it could help them financially in terms of taxes.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. I have seen so many memes recently about how celebrities saying "we are in the same boat" when their boat is really a multi million dollar yacht. Obviously, these are just memes, but it is a serious issue. From the comfort of their mansions and yachts, these people can easily tweet about sending their prayers and encourage others to donate. They could just as easily donate millions themselves, but for whatever reason most of them are not doing that. It is very disappointing to see as our society for some reason looks up to these people so much and if they donated, so would much of their following.
